Is "nickel silver" (which has no silver in it) better for fillet brazing 4130 (CroMo) than bronze? I have seen comments saying it's bad but many people seem to use it. Like I said, I have only been brazing small things, like extending the linkage for my USS. There might be enough IR energy coming off steel being brazed to warrent some kind of glasses designed for brazing, but I have not heard of this before. Its glowing red / orange, but Im pretty sure it wont damage your eyes, and Ive never heard of it splattering - but dont take my word for it - its not a bad idea to at least wear safety glasses anyway. Also welding with a torch the pool can POP and blow molten steel everywhere.īrazing, you dont get the metal that hot. When you weld with an oxy acetaline torch you need a pair of dark goggles, because a pool of molten steel is very bright, and you cant see what you are doing without the dark goggles, but they are not as dark as arc welding masks. When you arc weld you must have a very dark face mask, because the light from the arc will blind you. I may be a little confused on the exact alloy to braze with, but I know you have to get it right. You have to braze it with a low temp rod. I have been mostly flux wire welding my frames and parts together, and I learned that chrome moly frames (usually lugged frames) are better / stronger steel - so I started collecting a few such bikes intending to frame bash them into LBW bents, but then I learned you cant weld chrome moly steel without severly softening and weaking it. I think silver solder is something different (lower temp). You are probably right about the nickel silver and nickel bronze. ![]() Im not sure which torch I have, its one of those blister-pack. Ive brazed a few smaller parts on my homedesigned bikes, and a few 1/2" conduit connections with a swirl port torch, and I can tell from doing those that I would not be able to heat up a lug connection hot enough to get a good-wicked joint. Who has a lower melting nickel silver rod? Weird, the Nickel Silver has a liquidous state of 1715F, while the Nickel Bronze is 1620F. Mapp/air (swirl, no oxy tank) I have read that people use the JHT7 torch head (looks the same as this one without the hose) with good results. Im not sure whether a swirl port torch with Mapp gas will produce enough heat to braze a lugged frame connection. It melts at a lower temp, and you dont want to heat up the steel tubes any more than necessary, or they will soften by the braze connection. Nickle silver is better for chrome moly frames. ![]() If you wear a welding helment you wont be able to see anything at all.īut you'd still want IR and UV protection, wouldn't you? You dont need darkening eye protection for brazing. ![]()
